A group of 45 students hit the mats yesterday in the New Zealand Secondary School Singles.
Post section was strong, the majority having played in the Junior Singles event the day before, including the champion Matthew Foster. He was in promising form once again and defeated the defending champion in round two, but was ousted by cousin Nathan Trowell in the last eight.
Nathan then ran into Shawn Perry, yesterday’s runner up, and their semi final was as expected - a high quality game which came down to the wire. Fortunately for Shawn it was déjà vu and he was safely through to the final.
There was a chance for an all Southland final - although from different schools - but instead Hawera High’s Sam Landers defeated Matthew Tosh.
Sam Landers won the plate event in the New Zealand Junior Singles so it was great to see him in a final again, only this time for the main event. He looked to be playing well but Southland Boys High School’s Shawn Perry had the better scoring power, ultimately taking the win at 10-4.
For the bronze medal play off we saw Nathan Trowell and Matthew Tosh go head to head. This was another tight match with only one point in it, but it was Nathan who came out on top.
Over in the plate event, it was really cool to see Dylan Foster’s name finish in first place. He is the younger brother of Matthew Foster.
Thank you to the live streamers and commentators for their outstanding work, the games have been a great watch for the viewers.
Congratulations to all place-getters but especially Shawn Perry for a great weekend’s bowling.
