The New Zealand Secondary School Pairs wrapped up an incredible weekend of U18 bowls.
On Saturday we saw Matthew Foster claim the New Zealand Junior Singles title; on Sunday Shawn Perry took out the New Zealand Secondary School Singles; and on Monday it was Nathan Trowell and Akuhata Keelan’s turn for the New Zealand Secondary School Pairs.
This was a spectacular win for the Gisborne Boys High School students who were also the defending champions.
Nathan Trowell had reached the semi finals of both singles events earlier in the weekend, so it was a case of “third time’s a charm.” His consistency earned him a well-deserved Player of the Tournament.
In the semi-final they defeated fellow GBHS students, brothers Matthew and Dylan Foster, after scoring six shots in the final three ends to steal the win.
Jordan Keene and Logan Heppell representing Onslow College were the opponents in the final, making the best start at 4-0 after two ends. Nathan and Akuhata bounced back with a four to level the scores; the result of a classy last bowl from Nathan. From there they kept the momentum rolling, eventually winning 9-6.
The deciding match for the bronze medal was won by Matthew and Dylan Foster over Matthew Adlam and Michael Burke from Mount Maunganui College; and the plate event saw Feilding High School’s AJ Bond and Skye Burema finish on top.
Special thank you to NZIB for running the events, and to all North Wellington helpers for their contributions.
