Auckland’s Ross Brayshaw and Ron Studman became the 2023 National Masters Pairs Champions today, defeating Poverty Bay’s Warren Gibb and Lois Lamont in the final.
They established an early 9-1 lead, spurred on by the support of their proud New Lynn RSA Club who are large in numbers and commonly referred to as the ‘blue army’.
Gibb and Lamont showed good fight at this point, and in similar fashion to their comeback in the semi final, scored a two and a four to close the gap 7-9. This is where it stopped though, and the game concluded at 14-7.
While Brayshaw is well known in the bowling community, Ron Studman is a new face to those outside of Auckland. As it happens, this is Studman’s first nationals - and what a remarkable introduction he has had. No doubt he will now become a regular attendee at this wonderful annual event.
Congratulations to both finalists, and also to Richard Verdonk/Paul McGovern and Roger/Maureen Bartosh (2016 National Masters Pairs Champions), for claiming bronze.
