Mat Blacks Paul Smith (Tauranga) and Simon Thomas (Ashburton) rose to the top of a quality field in the NZ Henselite Singles on Sunday.
Smith showcased his class and consistency from the first game through to the final round, though Thomas made him work for it. He was inches away from the win himself, despite his first round loss against Hutt Valley junior, Jordan Keene, who performed remarkably well across the event.
Leaving nothing to chance though, Smith finished the tournament undefeated; something he never expected heading into the weekend given that he was up against six players of such high calibre. He praised the Canterbury Hall in his speech which is fast becoming his favourite venue as it marks his 2019 and now 2021 NZ Henselite Singles titles.
Big congratulations on a well deserved win, and a special mention to Otago’s David Webb who replaced Gary Low at short notice and took out third place.
