Masterton will be home to two celebrated indoor bowling events this weekend, starting with the Henselite Singles on Saturday 19th September. For the first time in 46 years, there will be just eight contestants in the field: a result of the new format. All eight would have needed to be in great form to get through their centre singles and zone finals, so the national event will not disappoint.
Two of the standout contenders include Zone Eight’s Mat Black representative Daniel French and Zone Four’s former North Island representative Tim Veale. Both players are regular attendees at the Henselite Singles and both have a superb singles record. French won this event back in 2014 while Veale was crowned the National Singles Champion just last year.
Another big name with singles success is Zone One’s Steve Fisher. He finished second in the 2017 National Singles final and picked up the Interisland Men’s Singles medal in 2019. Kyle Waldron, recently selected for the North Island team, will be flying the flag for Zone Five and - given his consistent form - has every chance to finish on top.
Les Heywood from Zone Three and Ken Mackenzie from Zone Seven are no strangers to the Henselite Singles Final. Could 2020 be their year? On the other hand, Brian Booker will be attending for the first time. The Zone Six representative has a long history in the game but has only returned in the last few years following a ten-year break. What a great way to come back.
16-year-old Nathan Trowell is fast becoming a household name and will have plenty of support from Zone Two. He has a magnificent junior record with two New Zealand Secondary School titles to his name, plus the inaugural New Zealand 1-5 Pairs. But make no mistake, Nathan can cut it with the seniors too.
