Get ready for the zones!
COVID-19 may have thrown a spanner in the works, but the Singles and Mixed Pairs Zone Finals are still full steam ahead for this weekend. Auckland is the exception of course, but all going well, Zone 1 will be played at a later date.
This is the first year the Henselite Singles will have a zone play off, making the road to the National Final even tougher. Whoever makes it there will have no doubt earned their spot, and what a competition it will be to see eight of NZ’s most in-form singles players go head to head in a round robin.
Names that stand out across the zones include Mark Ridley, Ashley Diamond, Marcus Trlin, Tim Veale, Ken Mackenzie and Daniel French, but each of them will have stiff competition to get past.
Similarly, the Mixed Pairs events will also be hard-fought. There is a real mix of combinations, including couples, siblings, and young bowlers paired with experience, but as far as favourites go, most people would be eyeing up Mat Blacks Ashley Diamond and Sheree Holmes. Together they won the first ever NZ Mixed Pairs event back in 2016 and have also proven themselves as a formidable duo on the international mats.
There are a number of bowlers who qualified for both events; Kyle Waldron, Ashley Diamond, Nathan Trowell, Ella Smailes, Lyn Martin, Marg Milne and Ken Mackenzie will all get a double shot at a national final.
Who will you be cheering for? Who are your picks to win? No matter which way you look at it, all eight zones are capable of producing the NZ Mixed Pairs and Henselite Singles champions. See the zone finalists below and feel free to fill in the blanks:
