It is well-known that the North Island team have had a lengthy winning streak from 2004 with some comfortable wins along the way. In recent times though, the interisland test match has been an event not to be missed and the two island teams have produced titanic battles.
In Ashburton 2018 and Pukekohe 2019, the South have put themselves in the box seat after the first two rounds; but the North continue to dig their heels in and produce what can only be described as a couple of epic comebacks.
This year sees the return of New Zealand players scattered throughout both teams which has resulted in a big shake-up of the South Island men’s side. Ashley Diamond, Gary Low, Daniel French, Simon Thomas and Michael Lawson all bring that next level of x-factor to the squad. Add Suzanne Mackie plus a highly respected Alanna Moffitt to the mix and you have a strong foundation for a well-oiled team.
The North Island team have also been injected with Mat Blacks, most noticeably in the women’s side . Sheree Holmes, Fiona Keegan, Teri Anderson, Joy Archer, Dale Rayner and Lisa Gould are strewn across the four disciplines to give the North a great boost. Returning to the men’s singles and pairs skip roles are Mat Blacks Paul Smith and Paul Wright. The head to head matches between them and their New Zealand counterparts are expected to be of top quality.
Who is your pick to be holding the Kevin Eddy Memorial Trophy come Saturday night: North or South? With such evenly matched teams in a high-pressure event, only one thing is certain: the 40th Inter-island Test Match will be quite the occasion.
