They won their first match last night against Southland 37-11.

The North made the best start to lead 11-5 after the first round. A feature of the first round was the men's triples match in which the North trailed 0-14 going into the last end against South Otago's Graeme Hill, Barry Gray and Craig Botting. On this end Grant Rayner, Richard Caddy and Alex Reed had all the pressure on them to score a shot to avoid the humiliation of not scoring. This he did much to the jubilation of his team and the onlookers, South Otago winning that game 14-1. The second round saw a much closer game but South Otago won again 7-5 and wrapped up the match13-6 in the final round.

The second round saw South Otago come back strongly to win the women's fours and the men's singles pairs and triples and drawing the men's fours to win that round 9-7 and to trail 14-18 overall.

In the final round the games were close but the Northerners came through to reverse the result of the second round scoring 9-7 to run out the winners 27-21.

The North's women's triple of Fiona Keegan (TG), Shelley Jacombs (HV), Denise Clarkson (HV) are in great form beating Eileen Grant (s), Barbara Read, Jane Wintringham (SO) 12-5, 16-1, but Grant showed all her class in the final round to win 9-8. Wrap-up/Summary

The North Island Indoor Bowls team has had to work hard and come from behind to win the 38th annual Inter-Island Indoor Bowls test match for the twenty seventh time overall. Their previous wins included sixteen for the Henry and Eddy Trophy which was retired in 2003 and replaced with the Kevin Eddy Memorial Trophy which they have now won for the past twelve years in a row. The match was held at the Ashburton Indoor Bowls Stadium, McNally Street, Ashburton at the weekend.

The first session was halved four wins each to be 8-8. The South stormed ahead in the second session winning six games to the North's two to lead 20-12. In the final session the North reversed that result winning six games to the South's two but won on a count back of ends 250.5 to 235.5.

The North won the Inter-Island medals in the women's singles, pairs and fours and the South won the women's triples and all of the men's disciplines singles, pairs, triples and fours.

The stand out team was the North's women's pair of Maureen Pruden and Joy Archer who were unbeaten.

In the first round the North won the women's singles, pairs and fours and the men's triples while the South won the women's triples and the men's singles, pairs and fours.

In the women's singles Jessie Moffat made a good start against Keri Te Tamaki who is on debut for the South to lead 13-2 after eight of the 21 ends. She maintained her excellent form to run out the winner 21-10. In the men's singles Daniel French upset the North's Steve Fisher who had had an unbeaten run on the tour. French got away to lead 5-0 after five ends but Fisher closed the gap to 6-7 after eleven ends. A four to French on the twelfth end was just what he needed to regain control and to go on to win 19-9.

In the women's pairs between the North's Maureen Pruden and Joy Archer and the South's Eileen Grant and Colleen Fenton the scores were 4-4 after six ends. However a four on the seventh end to the North shifted the momentum and they scored consistently to lead 13-7 after 15 ends. On the last six ends they scored seven shots overall to win 20-7.

The men's pairs between Simon Thomas and Mike King for the South and Paul Smith and Jason Parker for the North saw the Southern combination in control at 12-6 after twelve ends of the 21 end game. The Northern pair then came back strongly to trail 13-14 after eighteen ends. The last three ends were extremely tight with just one shot scored each end with the South hanging on to win 16-14.

The South's women's triple of Alanna Moffitt, Marilyn Holmes and Carolyn Cooper outplayed the North's Fiona Keegan, Shelley Jacombs and Denise Clarkson to lead 13-1 after eight ends of the 21 end game. The game evened up over the next seven ends with the South still leading 19-16. The South then went ahead again to win 23-17.

The men's triples saw the North's Grant Rayner, Richard Caddy and Alex Reed dominate over the early stages of their game against Robert Wilson, Hayden Warnes and Giovanni Persico to be 18-9 ahead after seventeen ends of the 21 end game. However a five to the South on the eighteenth end tightened the match right up with the North 20-17 in front going into the final end. On this end Wilson was holding the shot and needed to move the jack to score three to draw the game but killed the jack to be 18-23 behind. On the extra end because of the kill the North scored one to win 23-18.

In the women's fours the North Island got out of jail in one of the most dramatic ways possible. The South's Ann Cottrell, Kylie Gould, Elaine Carnie and Caroline Braithwaite were leading 11-4 after twelve ends of the 18 end game against Dale Rayner, Sharon Peters, Sue Bourne and Jacque Porter. They maintained the pressure and led 14-10 after the penultimate end. On the last end Rayner held one or two shots and needed four for the draw. She drove at the head and when the bowls settled she unbelievably held five shots for the win.

The men's fours saw the South's Michael Lawson, Grant Wilson, Derek Cooper and Brandon Williams make the best start with a five on the first end. However the North's Matt Ellis, Mark Ridley, Robin Porter and Sean Ridley fought back to be 9-9 after nine ends. From that point on the game tightened up and going into the final end the score was 14-14. On the final end each team had a bowl equidistant to the jack at the back of the mat and Ellis had the last bowl. In endeavouring to make sure of the shot he tried to move one of his bowls closer but unfortunately hit the South's bowl in giving them the win 15-14.

The second session was dominated by the South Island winning the women's singles, triples and fours and the men's pairs, triples and fours. The North won the women's pairs and men's singles.

Inter-Island medals decided so far are Women's pairs (North) and the South have won the women's triples, men's pairs and men's fours.

In the women's singles the South's Keri Te Tamaki reversed the result of the first game to win 19-15 while the North wrapped up the Inter-Island medal in the women's pairs 20-15.

The South won the medals in the women's triples with a convincing 20-13 victory and the South recovered from the devastating loss they received at the hands of Dale Rayner in the women's fours to keep their hopes alive for the Inter-Island medal winning 17-14.

The men's events were dominated by the South with wins in all disciplines except the men's singles that Steve Fisher won. They clinched the Inter-Island medals in the men's pairs and fours.

In the final round Daniel French from Otago made every post a winner defeating Steve Fisher in the men's singles 22-17 to claim the Inter-Island medal two games to one.

Jessie Moffat claimed the women's singles inter-island medal when she won a close encounter against Keri Te Tamaki. It was only in the last few ends that Moffat took control to win 23-15.

The North's men's pair of Smith and Parker finally hit their straps in the final round to score a convincing 22-12 win against Thomas and King 29-12 to help the North's overall score as did the North's women's triple of Keegan, Jacombs and Clarkson against Moffitt, Holmes and Cooper 20-9;

The South's Wilson, Warnes and Persico won the men's triples decider 23-8 for the Inter-Island medals against Grant Rayner, Caddy and Reed.

The North then won the deciding game in the women's fours to clinch the inter-island medals for Dale Rayner, Sharon Peters, Sue Bourne and Jacque Porter when they defeated Ann Cottrell, Kylie Gould, Elaine Carnie and Caroline Braithwaite 20-9.

The North's women's pair of Pruden and Archer had a huge tussle with Grant and Fenton and won the game on the last end 16-15 to record a clean sweep.
