The Masters of the Southern Zone wrestled back the Delwyn Hughes Shield for 2021, with an outstanding performance from Southland’s Brian Hotton in the men’s singles. He defeated Masters Singles champion 10-6, 13-12 and 9-8 to give the South a solid boost ahead of each round, and the women’s triples team of Jan Low, Kathryn Edgar and Carmel Sullivan capitalised with a further three wins themselves: 9-8, 14-4 and 13-8.
As a whole, the Southern Zone pulled together to inch ahead of the Northern Zone every round, winning 10-6, 9-7 and 13-3 to ultimately win 32-16.
Best performances of the Northern Zone were the men’s pair of Brian MacDonald and Noel Bishop with two wins and a draw, and Lorraine Phipps in the women’s singles with two wins.
Captain Trevor Rayner from North Wellington enjoyed being a southerner for the evening and was proud of his team, and Captain Ivan Phipps commented on how enjoyable the event is. Long may it continue!
