One of the many perks of indoor bowls is the chance for families to team up in sport, and in the NZ 1-5 Pairs, two father-son combinations did just that.
In fact, Poverty Bay’s Matthew Foster has competed in this event three times now, and each time with a different family member. Matthew won with his cousin Nathan in 2019, came second with his brother Dylan in 2020, and now in his final year, Matthew shares in the success of a National title with his Dad, Mike Foster.
As humble as they come, 18 year old Matthew’s main motivation was to win for his Dad. Mike lead brilliantly off the front too, and their determined efforts put them in an unrivalled position with six from six wins.
Shawn and John Perry, Southland’s father-son duo, also had a terrific day together. They collected five comfortable wins, the Fosters being their only loss. They were awarded second place, one step closer than their efforts in 2019 where they finished third.
Congratulations to Matthew and Mike on an outstanding achievement! No doubt we will see Mike team up with youngest son Dylan next year as he aims to defend the title.
