Final wrap-up/summary.
Canterbury Indoor Bowls representatives have retained the Welch Trophy for the fourth successive year at the Diamond Jubilee of the Lion Foundation Welch Trophy tournament, the symbol of supremacy in New Zealand Indoor Bowls at the Waikato Indoor Bowls Hall, Duncan Road, Hamilton on Sunday.
The Diamond Jubilee produced an absolute classic encounter with the result in doubt up until the final round of pairs to decide the champions. This Canterbury’s twelfth win overall.
The team consisted of Simon Thomas, Blair Spicer, Rob Osborne, Julie Thomas, Ashley Diamond, Owen Ditfort, David Philpott and Chris Moffitt. The reserve was Mike King and the successful manager once again was Julie Dalley.
They won with 104 points followed by Manawatu 100, Auckland 96.5, Tauranga 94, North Wellington 75 and Otago 70.5.
Auckland made the early running and led after the first session Auckland 27, Tauranga 18, Canterbury 17.5, North Wellington 17, Manawatu 16.5 and Otago 12.
In the second session Tauranga had a good round of fours and pairs and moved into second place behind Auckland while Canterbury which had made a slow start was not helped by losing both games of fours. Manawatu made good progress in this round with an excellent round of pairs to move into third place. Auckland was on 44.5 followed by Tauranga 38.5, Manawatu 38.5, Canterbury 37, North Wellington 33 and Otago 24.5.
The third session was an enthralling one. In this session Canterbury made their move up the leader board with a great round of fours and pairs while Auckland won one game of fours, had a good round of singles but finished the session with a disastrous round of pairs for Canterbury to be just half a point behind Auckland that was on 60.5, Canterbury 60, Tauranga 58, Manawatu 54, North Wellington 47 and Otago 44.5.
In the fourth session the lead changed after each discipline with Canterbury taking the lead after the fours, Manawatu then produced a superb round of singles winning six games and drawing one out of the eight while Canterbury won only three games and Auckland four to take the lead briefly as Auckland regained the lead after the pairs when they won three games to Manawatu and Canterbury’s two. Auckland led with 81.5, Manawatu 81, Canterbury 80, Tauranga 71, Otago 59.5 and North Wellington 59.
In the final session Canterbury won both games of fours to regain the lead as Auckland and Manawatu had one win each. In this round a critical match saw Simon Thomas defeat Keith Waghorn 7-6 in a very close encounter. In the singles the gap closed again as Manawatu won four and a half games of singles to Auckland’s four and Canterbury’s three wins and a draw. Canterbury led with 95 followed by Manawatu 94, Auckland 93.5, Tauranga 85, Otago 70.5 and North Wellington 66.
In the final round of pairs Canterbury pulled out all the stops to win three of their four games while their rivals faded with Manawatu winning two and Auckland one game.
The top player of the tournament was Julie Thomas, Canterbury with 24 points.
The other districts’ best performances were provided by Tim Veale, Manawatu 23, Geoff Coughey, Tauranga 23, Patrick Morrison, Auckland 20 and Avon Compton, North Wellington 20.
