Final wrap-up/summary.
Canterbury Indoor Bowls representatives have retained the 58th Lion Foundation Welch Trophy, the symbol of supremacy in New Zealand Indoor Bowls at the Te Rauparaha Arena in Porirua on Sunday.
Canterbury dominated the competition in the 1970’s and won last year and have had several close encounters over recent years but had fallen in the final session. Last year they held their nerve to take out the championship and repeated the performance this year. This was the tenth time they have won the Welch Trophy.
The winning team comprised Simon Thomas, Ashley Diamond, Rob Osborne, Julie Thomas, Blair Spicer, Owen Ditfort, David Philpott and Mike King. Only Simon Thomas, King and Ditfort were in last year’s winning team.
For Simon Thomas, King, Ditfort and Philpott it was their second Welch Trophy medal. Philpott was in the winning team in 1981. Julie Thomas, Osborne, Diamond and Spicer won for the first time.
They won with 118 points followed by Manawatu 93.5, Tauranga 89, Hutt Valley 84.5, Otago 78.5. and Roskill and Districts 76.5.
Canterbury made the best start in the first round of fours, singles and pairs and led with 23 points followed by Hutt Valley 21.5 and Tauranga 17. The other pre tournament favourite Manawatu was seven points behind in fourth place with sixteen points.
Canterbury maintained the pressure in the second round to lead with 40 points with Manawatu settling down to move into second place with 38 points, Tauranga was third at this stage with 36.5.
In round three Canterbury increased their lead to 65 points followed by Manawatu 60 and Hutt Valley 57.5. At this stage the result was too close to call but in the fourth session Canterbury broke away from the field to lead with 91 points followed by Manawatu 12.5 points behind with 78.5 points and Hutt Valley third on 76.5.
In the final round, Manawatu won both their fours while Canterbury had a win and a draw. Canterbury dominated the singles winning six games while Manawatu only won two games in this round which handed the Welch Trophy to Canterbury. The remaining teams were left to battle out the minor placings in the pairs. Canterbury consolidated their victory in the pairs with another three wins while Tauranga won four games to move up to third with Manawatu second.
The top player of the tournament was Owen Ditfort with 22 points followed by Blair Spicer 21 and Julie Thomas 20 along with Otago’s Ross Garner.
Although all of the Canterbury players contributed to the win, with all winning at least half of their games.
Tauranga’s best performance was provided by Willie Rudolph with19 points , Roskill and Districts Stuart Niven scored 17 points, Hutt Valley’s Joseph Zino and Denise Clarkson and Murray Larkin scored 17 points while Jonathan Warrington and Cliff Byrne were the top players for Manawatu with 18 points.
