Final wrap-up/summary.
The six Paterson Trophy Indoor Bowls winners were found this weekend to go forward to the Lion Foundation Welch Trophy inter-district final at the Lower Hutt Horticultural Hall, Lower Hutt from Friday 3rd to Sunday 5th September.
Auckland, Waikato, North Taranaki, Hutt Valley, Canterbury and Otago were the successful districts. Those districts that lost their Paterson Trophy were Roskill and Districts, Tauranga and Manawatu. Canterbury has won the Welch Trophy for the past two years
In zone one Auckland was in superb form with all of their players contributing to the win. Lance Jenner was the top player with 13 wins. He won all of his singles and the team he was in with Don Fremlin, Paul and Carol Wright won all of their fours. The other four, which included Gavin Eccles, Kerrin Fremlin, Rodney Mills and Patrick Morrison all had ten wins each. Last year’s Paterson Trophy winner, Roskill and Districts were runners-up after a titanic battle with Counties for second place
Auckland last won the Paterson Trophy in this zone in 2007 and 2008 and went on to win the Welch Trophy in 2007.
Final standings were Auckland 115, Counties 100, Roskill and Districts 98, Northland 79, North Harbour 74, Thames Valley 68.
Zone two ended up a real cliffhanger between Waikato and Tauranga. Waikato came through in the final session to regain the Paterson Trophy off Tauranga which they last won in 2008. Their last win in the Welch Trophy was in 2006. Tauranga led with 70.5 points to Waikato’s 67.5 after the fourth round of fours but Waikato came through with a brilliant round of singles to take the lead 79.5 to 77.5. Waikato then won three games of pairs to Tauranga’s one win and a draw to clinch the win. Both Bay of Plenty and Hawkes Bay provided strong competition in an evenly contested match.
Best performances for Waikato were provided by Gavin Stringer with 18 points and Maureen Pruden with 17 points.
Final standings were Waikato 88.5, Tauranga 82, Bay of Plenty 75.5, Hawkes Bay 71.5 and Poverty Bay 42.6.
Zone three was strongly contested with North Taranaki and Taranaki battling it out. North Taranaki held on to snatch the win. In the final session two wins in the fours were crucial to their success as the singles and pairs were evenly shared. North Taranaki last won the Paterson Trophy in 2002 and won the Welch Trophy in 1980. Their win was spearheaded by Mark Ridley and Lindsay Willis with 21 points and John Zittersteijn with 19 points. North Taranaki’s best performances were provided by Paul Midgley with 21 points and Grant l’Ami with 18 points. Manawatu which were the defending Paterson Trophy holders finished a distant third.
Final standings were North Taranaki 99, Taranaki 94, Manawatu 57.5, Wanganui 57.5 and King Country 52.
In Zone four Hutt Valley successfully defended the Paterson Trophy with Upper Hutt Valley finishing second. This zone was also keenly contested with both North Wellington and Horowhenua performing creditably. Top scorer for Hutt Valley was Lois Randall and for Upper Hutt Valley, Lisa White who both recorded 24 points each.
Final standings were Hutt Valley 114, Upper Hutt valley 106.5, North Wellington 103.5, Horowhenua 97, Bush Ruahine 64 and Wairarapa 55.
Canterbury won in zone five after dominating early but then had to hold off a late challenge after a strong finish from Ashburton. Canterbury’s Simon Thomas fell sick during the fourth session on Saturday and was replaced by substitute Chris Moffitt for the remainder of the matches. Canterbury’s win was spearheaded by Rob Osborne who scored 25 points along with Ashley Diamond and Blair Spicer with 23 points and Mike King 22 points. Ashburton’s Alex Crawford also scored 23 points and Sandra Keith and Ken Mackenzie had 20 points each. After the final round of fours Canterbury had a four point advantage over Ashburton. Ashburton closed the gap in the final round of singles to three points but Canterbury dominated the pairs to retain their title.
Final standings were Canterbury 120, Ashburton 111, Golden Bay-Motueka 97.5, Nelson 85, Marlborough 69 and West Coast 57.5.
Otago won zone six and in so doing retained the Paterson Trophy for that zone. Otago’s main competition came from Southland. Otago last won the Welch Trophy in 2003. Otago’s best performance was provided by Kristen Gould with 26 points, Ross Garner 24 points and Garry Flewitt and Daniel French with 22 points. Southland’s Warwick Gray scored 23 points.
Final standings were Otago 125.5, Southland 112.5, Central Otago 81, South Otago 79, South Canterbury 72.5, North Otago 69.5.
