Finals Wrap up/Summary
Australia retained the Henselite Trophy in the biennial Trans Tasman Indoor Bowls Test Match held at the Balclutha Memorial Hall, Balclutha from May 12-14 after the test ended in an enthralling 33 all draw.
Australia has now won the Henselite Trophy five times since the event started in 1975 and that was in 1976, 1979, 1991, 2009 and now 2011.
Australia made a blistering start on the first day to lead 13-9 and then increased their lead by winning the second day 14-6 to lead overall 27-17. However New Zealand never gave up and fought back on the final day winning that day 16-6 to draw the Trans Tasman 33-33.
New Zealand staged the comeback in the morning session on the final day by winning the women’s singles and fours and men’s and mixed fours to trail 25-29. Australia’s only win was in the men’s singles.
In the final session Australia needed to win two of the six games to draw the series and retain the trophy. New Zealand fought all the way but Australia won both the men’s and women’s triples which meant that a 33 all draw was the best New Zealand could do after a huge effort.
Lisa White for New Zealand and Chris Dudman for Australia were the stand out players.
The women’s singles between new cap Lisa White, Upper Hutt Valley and Monika Korn, New South Wales was a titanic struggle. On the first day Korn got away to the best start but White fought back going down 19-21. On the second day with White’s nerves more settled they fought out a 15-15 draw which meant that White needed to win by three points on the third day to win the Australasian title on a count back. However in a great match White appeared to have the title in hand when she led 24-17 with two ends to play in the 25 end game. Korn refused to lie down and scored a two and three, White winning the match in identical style to day one 24-22. So it went to a count back on ends with White having scored on one more end than Korn 38-37 to win the medal.
Chris Dudman, Tasmania won the men’s singles against Grant l’Ami, Taranaki.14-20, 24-20, 23-22. L’Ami won the first game in convincing fashion but Dudman two tight matches on the second and third days. In the third match the scores were level 19-18 after 22 ends. They then exchanged threes to be 22-22 going into the final end. Dudman held the shot at the end of the mat and l’Ami ran at it but just missed what he was going for Dudman winning a great match 23-22 and the Australasian medal.
Australia’s Meredith Norton, Anne Draffen, Jody Moore and Patricia Legge had wrapped up the women’s fours after the first two days against Sandra Keith, Fiona Wilson, Carol Wright and Maureen Pruden, New Zealand 19-12, 18-16 but the New Zealanders still needed to win on the third day to go towards the Henselite Trophy. They were successful winning 17-9.
In the men’s fours between New Zealand’s Blair Spicer, John Zittersteijn, Ashley Diamond and Mike Phipps and Tony Simpson, Arthur Finch, David Speechley and Terry Hogan, Australia, New Zealand won on day one 22-8, Australia won day two 14-13 and New Zealand won the decider 16-13 to win the medals.
New Zealand’s Simon Thomas, Grant Rayner, Julie Thomas and Gina Owen won the mixed fours with three wins against Ian Ogilvie, Rodney Wilson, Julie Zaporozec and Barbara Hill 24-21, 11-8, 30-18. The New Zealanders really took control in the third match to win easily.
In the women’s pairs Lisa White combined with skip Fiona Wilson, Tauranga to once again shine. Both players have represented the North Island as a combination for some years. They drew the first game against Monika Korn and Julie Zaporozec 17-17 then scored a narrow 19-18 win on the second day and finished with a convincing 19-3 win to win the Australasian medals.
In the men’s pairs Grant l’Ami and Ashley Diamond, New Zealand won the first game on Thursday against Tony Simpson and Arthur Finch, Australia 24-8, followed by a 20-14 and 19-16 on the next two days to be unbeaten.
New Zealand’s crack six-bowl pair combination of Canterbury’s Simon and Julie Thomas who had won the Australasian medals in this discipline in the last three Trans Tasman’s had to yield their crowns to Australia’s Ian Ogilvie and Barbara Hill. The Australians won the first two matches 25-13, 20-21. New Zealand won the third match 20-16 to salvage some pride and help the overall result.
In the mixed eight-bowl pairs New Zealand’s John Zittersteijn and Maureen Pruden lost the first match to Rodney Wilson and Anne Draffen 14-20, They drew the second day 18-18 but came out strongly in the third to record a convincing 17-15 win and take the medals in this event.
Australia won both the men’s and women’s triples to clinch the Henselite Trophy.
In the women’s event Meredith Norton, Jody Moore and Patricia Legge, Australia defeated Sandra Keith, Carol Wright, New Zealand 22-11, 22-10, 21-15 while Chris Dudman, David Speechley and Terry Hogan, Australia defeated Blair Spicer, Grant Rayner and Mike Phipps, New Zealand 20-10, 22-15, 24-14.
