History of the Champion of Champions Singles

The champion of champions singles was introduced in 1975. There had been a feeling that a competition, which brought the district singles championship winners together to fight out a national title, would be well worthwhile. In 1975 Trans Tours offered their support and the event was under way. The first prize of a trip to Fiji increased the interest in the event and there were many keen struggles over the years. The first prize was increased to a trip for two to Fiji soon after the start. Unfortunately Trans Tours found it necessary to withdraw their support in 1979. While the event was sponsored by Trans Tours districts were required to run a separate Trans Tours club event and then a district champion of champions. In 1979 the requirement to have club events was rescinded.
From 1980 to 1986 the Federation continued this event as a national champion of champions singles without the attraction of the overseas tour as a prize. Since 1986 Henselite has sponsored the event.
Districts find by competition a person to represent them at the national final. Some districts send their champion of champions winner others their district singles champion, either is acceptable.
It wasn't until 1996, the 22nd year of the event, that a woman made history by winning the event. This was achieved by Kath Arvidson from Counties and repeated by Ellen Frew, also from Counties, the following year.
