Wrap-up / Summary :
South Island Men’s Singles representative Gary Low from the Grasmere Club, Southland capped off a fine year when he won the national final of the 37th Henselite Indoor Bowls Champion of Champion Singles held at the Horticultural Hall, Lower Hutt on Saturday.
In the final he defeated Roskill and Districts’ Anthony McQuoid 14-9 who came in as a late replacement for Steve Fisher who had to withdraw from the final because of ill health.
Low won the Inter-Island medal in the men’s singles at the North versus South Test recently and along with his father and mother Graham and Jan Low won the national championship triples. Low has come through the junior ranks and won the Cliff Thompson Trophy for the best junior player in the singles at the national championships in 1994. He followed that up with runner-up in this event in 1996 where he lost to Kath Arvidson, Counties in the final.
In the final over 15 ends against McQuoid the scores were level 4-4 after 4 ends. Low scored two singles on the next 2 ends but then McQuoid scored 3 shots on the 8th to take the lead 7-6. Low scored 1 shot to level the score 7-7 after 9 ends. McQuoid then went into the lead with two singles but that was to be the end of his scoring as Low put on the pressure to score 3, 3 and a 1 to run out the winner 14-9 in an exciting and enthralling match.
The semifinals saw McQuoid defeat Ken Mackenzie, Ashburton 13-5, while Low defeated Robert Wilson, South Otago 16-15.
In the semifinal between McQuoid and Mackenzie, it was an even start with both players trading shots for McQuoid to lead 3-2 after 5 ends. McQuoid then took control to score on 7 of the next 9 ends to lead 13-5 going into the last end when Mackenzie conceded.
The other semifinal was a real topsy-turvy affair. Wilson led 7-5 after 4 ends before Low scored on the next 5 ends to lead 12-7 after 9 ends. Wilson scored 3 and a 2 on the next 2 ends to tie the game before Low scored a 2 on the 12th end to lead 14-12. Wilson scored 2 singles on the next 2 ends to level the score going into the last end. On this end Wilson ran at the head with his last bowl and moved the jack which just fell off the end of the mat, Low scoring 2 shots for the kill to lead 16-14. Wilson could only score 1 on the extra end, Low winning a real cliffhanger 16-15.
In section play Low defeated Mathew Begg, Central Otago 12-6, Keith A Waghorn, King Country 13-7, Roger Jones, Upper Hutt Valley 13-9 and then lost to Matthew Ellis, Counties 10-12.
Last year’s champion, Mark Keen, Southland did not qualify for the final this year.
34 districts entered the final and twelve players qualified for post section play.
